Russian internet sensation: Giant triangular 'UFO' filmed hovering above Kremlin

Hovering ominously over the city, this video of what appears to be a triangle-shaped UFO has left Russians baffled.

Sitting motionless in the sky above the Kremlin in Moscow, clips of the unexplained object have become the most-viewed videos on Russia's YouTube.

The two videos, one taken at night from a car and one during the day, were both filmed by amateurs.

The UFO hovered for hours over Red Square in the Russian capital and was seen by hundreds of people.

The identity of the shape has not been confirmed but internet forums are buzzing with the sighting.

The UFO appeared on December 9th, the same night that a mysterious blue spiral light appeared over Norway. That was later attributed to a failed rocket launch from Russia.

Some have likened the object to one of the spaceships from Star Wars.

But others have said it is merely a reflection from inside the cameraman's car. If the object exists experts estimate that it could be up to a mile wide.

Some commentators have reacted sceptically to the videos and have pointed out that if hundreds of people had seen the object more videos and photos would have emerged by now.

Russian reports ruled out a UFO but police have refused to comment.

Nick Pope, a former Ministry of Defence UFO analyst, said it was 'one of the most extraordinary UFO clips I've ever seen'.

'At first I thought this was a reflection but it appears to move behind a power line, ruling out this theory.'

A spokesman for aerospace journal Jane's News said: 'We have no idea what it is.'

At a towering 8ft, is this the world's new tallest man?

At 8ft tall, Zhao Liang stands head and shoulders above the competition.

Which is lucky, as the 27-year-old is in the running to be the world's tallest man.

The current title holder is Bao Xishun ('the Mongolian mast'), who measures in at a measly 7ft 9in - a whole three inches shorter.

Mr Liang's claim came to light when he was admitted to Tianjin hospital, in China, for a routine operation on an old muscle tendon injury to his left foot.

Doctors confirmed his height as 8ft 0.7in. But his claim to be the world's tallest man has not yet been verified by Guinness World Records.

Mr Liang, who is now seeking official recognition, had been training as a basketball player when he sustained the foot injury over a decade ago.

He remained unemployed until 2006, when an art troupe in Jilin province employed him to perform magic tricks and play the saxophone and flute.

Mr Liang's parents are of normal height, with his father measuring 5ft 9in and his mother, 5ft 5in.

His mother Wang Keyun said that her son had a big appetite, eating eight hamburger-sized steamed buns as part of a three-course dinner.

'But I am so worried about his marriage, job and his health that my hair has turned white,' she added.

Liu Yuchen, a surgeon at the hospital, declared the operation on Mr Liang's foot a success.

He said that he would be able to walk normally in two months' time, but advised against any intense physical exercise.

Dr Yuchen said that Mr Liang was in good health and has no complications in relation to his height.

Horse that's allergic to grass

Shrouded in what looks like an ill-fitting Christmas jumper and leg warmers, she cuts a comical figure.

But the plight of Pandora the mare is no laughing matter.

The five-year-old thoroughbred has to be kept covered up because she is allergic to grass.
Even a single blade touching her coat is enough to leave her gasping for breath and covered in large, painful boils.

Her owner, Emily Pearce, has no option but to cover her up with a protective layer of high-tech polyester-based breathable fabric to avoid having to lock her away for her own safety.
She also wears a mask to protect her eyes. She is fed a special mixture of sugarbeet chaff and soya oil, along with 15 anti-histamine tablets a day.

'She does look silly but it is the only thing that helps her,' said Miss Pearce, 24, from Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire.

Pandora's £185 rug, imported from a specialist firm in Sweden, is usually used to protect a horse from insect bites. It is designed so that it can be buckled around her but leave her moving freely.

The mask, which costs £50, fits snugly over her ears and down to her muzzle and is held in place with Velcro. Although it covers her eyes, it is so fine she can see through it. Miss Pearce, an auxiliary veterinary nurse, bought the 15.2-hand horse for £2,600 in 2007.

Last summer Pandora began to develop a large, itchy lump on her belly at her stables in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire.

The lump continued to grow and when it was joined by others, Miss Pearce tried steroid injections but they did nothing to relieve Pandora's distress. In the end, a battery of tests was carried out, revealing she was allergic to every type of grass.

It is not clear what caused the condition to appear so suddenly, and there is no cure. Vet Peter Fenton said he had come across only two other cases - and neither was so acute.

The cat's whiskers: Meet Ugly Bat Boy, the follicly-challenged feline who has become a tourist attraction

He goes by the name of Ugly Bat Boy - no prizes for guessing why. This follicly-challenged feline has become a tourist attraction because of his bizarre appearance.Eight-year-old Ugly, whose breed is not known, spends most of his time keeping warm by sitting on a computer at the Exeter Veterinary Hospital in New Hampshire.

Staff at the veterinary hospital have even been forced to put up fliers saying he's perfectly normal - just unattractive. They claim he makes up for his terrible looks by having inner beauty and a nice disposition. He's also turned into something of a tourist attraction in Exeter, New Hampshire, America.'People come in and take pictures of him on their cell phones,' staff member Christie Hartnett said.
'He's just great. The impression from clients that come in is he's not real because he just sits so still.
'When he does move, he scares them, but they still think he's mesmerizing.'
Ugly and his sister, who only survived a few weeks, were both born without fur.

And although he may not look like an ordinary cat, staff at the hospital say he behaves exactly like every other feline they've ever known.
He loves attention and is very friendly.

The leaning tower of egg and flour: Chefs claim world record with pancake skyscraper

Two hotel chefs today claimed to have toppled the record for the world's tallest pancake stack.

Sean McGinlay and Natalie King of Glasgow's Hilton Grosvenor hotel measured their pancake tower at 29.5 inches (75cm) - beating the current title by 0.4in.

The chefs mixed about 100 eggs, more than 17 pints of milk, 11lbs of flour and 6.6lbs of butter for the challenge, a hotel spokeswoman said.

The hotel's general manager Stuart Nelson said: 'It was a bit shaky towards the end but somehow we managed to pull it off.

'Special thanks must go to Sean McGinlay and the kitchen team, who have spent a great deal of time this week perfecting their pancake recipes and stacking techniques.'

According to Guinness World Records, the current official record stands at 29.1in (74cm), achieved in Slovenia in August 2008.

That 672-pancake stack took 22 hours to build.

Parkour: Poetry in Motion

It seems like only yesterday every film to hit the big screen contained a compulsory parkour sequence. Maybe now, though, the French-born art of movement (l’art du déplacement) is going back where it belongs – to its roots, to the streets. But there’s a reason why parkour became such a craze so quickly. With stripped-down simplicity, and no props necessary, it’s the ultimate activity for rewarding a heightened awareness of the spaces and environments we inhabit. Or not, as the case may be.

When it’s executed well, parkour is like the archetypal poetry in motion, its practitioners exercising sublime balance and athleticism as they overcome obstacles with efficient ease. On the other hand, when it goes wrong it shows us up for the supremely bungling apes we are. Now, we sincerely hope for the sake of the guy performing a face plant here that this video is a stunt – and parkour traceurs may contest that it’s very bad example of their art – but sometimes you’ve just got to marvel at the folly of urban life.

What a slice! Stray golf ball discovered buried inside felled tree

Of all the flukes seen on a golf course, greenkeeper Richard Mitchell can claim one of the strangest.

As he took his chainsaw to a leylandii tree, he hit the exact spot where a ball was embedded in the wood and sliced through it.

The ball apparently lodged in a fork of the tree many years ago when a golfer hooked a drive on the first tee. The conifer grew around the ball and it remained hidden in the screen of 15 trees.

Trimmed, sanded and varnished, it is to become a rather unusual trophy board at Eaton Golf Club in Norwich.

Mr Mitchell discovered the ball last month after he felled the 40ft trees, planted 37 years ago, and began cutting the timber into 4ft lengths for firewood.

The piece of wood with the half ball visible is being preserved and varnished by former club captain Jim Cook who is a skilled woodworker.

It will then be kept behind the bar and used to record the names of everyone who gets a hole-in-one on the 198-yard ninth hole.

Peter Johns, the manager of the £675-a-year club, said: 'It is just an incredible find.

'We think it came off the first tee. It must have lodged in a fork or embedded itself in the trunk and the tree grew round it.

'If Richard had cut the trunk an inch or two either way we'd never have known it was there.'

Britain hit by biggest and weirdest Snow Day 18 years

* Britain hit by biggest snowfall in 18 years
* Anger as London bus service is totally cancelled
* One in five workers take the day off
* Brothers found dead on Mount Snowdon
* Thousands of schools closed due to treacherous roads
* Huge tailbacks despite warning drivers should stay home

Britain's worst snowfall for 18 years is set to last all week - and could cost the country's economy up to £3 billion.

Around one in five workers stayed at home today, according to a poll, and many are likely to fail to show up for work tomorrow.

Those who did make it into work this morning faced a battle to get home tonight after the Arctic weather caused widespread chaos.

Roads were blocked, airports closed, train services stopped and almost 3,000 schools closed due to the massive snowfall.

With roads blocked, much of London's bus service still out of action and many underground lines suspended, it is feared some in the capital may end up stranded.

Business chiefs estimated the cost of the bad weather to the economy would be £1.2billion but that it could rise to £3billion by the end of the week.

Cubans poach 'biggest egg' record

First they rid themselves of the capitalist yoke - now Cuba is claiming the world's largest egg.

A Cuban chicken may have poached the record by laying an egg weighing 180g, or 6.34oz.

One-year-old hen Titi should now win a place in the Guinness Book of Records - unless, of course, rival contenders cry fowl.

Titi belongs to the Martinez-Guerra family in Campo Florido, 25km or 15.53 miles east of the capital Havana.

Crowing Cuban officials say the egg weighs 10g more than the previous record-holder from - believe it or not - the Canary Islands.

Owner Estela Guerra said: "Everyone is amazed at how large it is.

"This has never happened before. We have never seen one this size and we've had chickens for a very long time."

Grandson Kendry added: "A short time ago they published something about an egg on the eastern side of the island.

"It weighed 171g so we got curious about our egg which is larger and heavier and could break all egg records.

"We've been trying to contact the media with the objective that the world should see this curiosity."
